J.K. Rowling studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter. She enrolled there in 1983 and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her course included French, and she spent part of her studies in Paris as an assistant teacher.
Her university education helped inform details in the Harry Potter books. Rowling has discussed how studying Latin and ancient languages contributed to the series’ spell names and vocabulary, although the books also draw on many other linguistic and mythological sources.
Exeter is in Devon in southwest England, not one of the two famous English university cities most often guessed for this question. Rowling later worked in a range of jobs, including as a researcher and bilingual secretary, before the Harry Potter manuscript was accepted for publication.
