J.K. Rowling’s charity supporting children and families is Lumos.
Lumos is an international organization founded by Rowling in 2005. Its work focuses on ending the institutionalization of children and helping governments develop family-based care and community services instead.
The charity was originally called the Children’s High Level Group. Rowling became involved after reading a newspaper article about children living in institutions, and the organization later adopted the name Lumos, drawn from the Latin word for light.
Lumos is separate from Volant Charitable Trust, Rowling’s private charitable trust, and from Gingerbread, the single-parent support organization with which she has been involved. Its central concern is children’s rights and family care.
