J.K. Rowling’s charity supporting children in Eastern Europe is Lumos. She became president of the charity, formerly known as the Children’s High Level Group, in 2005.
The organization was founded to help end the institutionalization of children and promote family-based care. Its work has included programs in countries such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Ukraine. The charity’s name refers to the Latin word for light and also echoes the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books.
Lumos is not a fictional organization inside the novels. It is a real charity working on child welfare, family support, and alternatives to orphanages and large residential institutions. Its name was changed to Lumos in 2010, giving the organization a clearer public identity linked to its goal of bringing children out of harmful institutional care.
