J.K. Rowling’s charity for vulnerable children and families is Lumos.
Lumos is an international charity founded by Rowling in 2005. It was originally established as the Children’s High Level Group, an organization focused on ending the institutionalization of children. The charity was renamed Lumos in 2010, taking its name from a light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books.
The organization works to replace institutions with family-based and community-based care. Its programs have addressed children separated from families, disability, poverty, and child-protection systems in several countries. The charity’s name therefore connects Rowling’s fictional work with a real-world effort to “bring children out of darkness,” a theme reflected in its public mission.
Lumos should not be confused with Comic Relief or BBC Children in Need, which are separate British charities and fundraising organizations.
