Jinu’s blue pet tiger in KPop Demon Hunters is named Derpy.
Derpy accompanies Jinu, the leader of the Saja Boys. The tiger has bright blue fur, a deliberately magical design that separates it from a realistic tiger and gives the character a playful presence within the demon world.
Derpy and the six-eyed magpie Sussie are based on the Korean folk-art tradition of minhwa, especially paintings associated with tigers and magpies. In the film, the animals also help connect Jinu and Rumi, allowing messages and communication to pass between them.
The creative team originally imagined Derpy without a clearly defined role. He later became more important as a character who exists between the human and demon worlds. His design draws on the whimsical and satirical qualities of Korean tiger-and-magpie imagery.
