What is the longest cave in the Indian subcontinent?
Answer
Krem Liat Prah
Answer
Krem Liat Prah
Krem Liat Prah is the longest known cave in the Indian subcontinent. It lies in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills, where extensive limestone formations have created one of South Asia’s most important cave systems.
The name combines “Krem,” the Khasi word for cave, with “Liat Prah.” The cave has been explored and surveyed through the Caving in the Abode of the Clouds project, and its mapped length has reached roughly 34 kilometers as connected passages continue to be investigated.
One of its most spectacular features is the Aircraft Hangar, an enormous trunk passage named for its extraordinary size. Krem Liat Prah is part of the Shnongrim Ridge area, which contains around 150 known caves and remains only partly explored.
Krem Liat Prah is sometimes confused with other Meghalaya caves such as Siju Cave or Krem Synrang Pamiang. Those are significant cave systems, but Krem Liat Prah holds the distinction of being the region’s longest known cave and the longest in the Indian subcontinent.
