What is the largest glacier in the Himalayas by area?
Answer
Siachen Glacier
Answer
Siachen Glacier
Siachen Glacier is the largest glacier in the Himalayas by area.
The glacier lies in the eastern Karakoram, a mountain system commonly discussed alongside the Himalayas but geographically distinct from the main Himalayan range. It extends for roughly 76 kilometres and occupies a strategically important high-altitude valley.
India and Pakistan dispute the surrounding region, and both maintain military positions near the glacier. The extreme altitude, crevasses, avalanches, and severe cold make Siachen one of the world’s most demanding environments for human activity.
People sometimes call Siachen the world’s longest non-polar glacier, but rankings vary according to the boundaries and definitions used. Baltoro Glacier is also in the Karakoram, not the main Himalaya, and is a frequent source of confusion.
