What is the largest archipelago nation in the world?

The story behind the answer

Indonesia is the largest archipelago nation in the world. It stretches across the equator between mainland Southeast Asia and Australia, linking thousands of islands into one maritime country.

Indonesia consists of more than 17,000 islands, though the precise count changes as surveying methods improve and tiny features are classified. Its principal island groups include Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the western part of New Guinea, along with the Lesser Sundas and the Maluku Islands.

The country’s geography has shaped its history. Seas separated communities, encouraging distinctive languages, foods and traditions, while monsoon winds connected ports to trade routes across the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Spice-producing islands, especially in Maluku, attracted Arab, Indian, Chinese and European merchants for centuries.

Indonesia is sometimes confused with the Philippines or Japan, both prominent island countries. However, Indonesia is generally recognized as the world’s largest archipelagic state by its combination of island count, territorial scale and maritime extent. About 5,000 kilometres separate its western and eastern reaches.
