Which ocean did Apollo 11 astronauts cross before reaching the Moon?
Answer
Atlantic Ocean
Answer
Atlantic Ocean
Apollo 11 astronauts crossed the Atlantic Ocean before reaching the Moon.
Apollo 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 16 July 1969. Florida lies beside the Atlantic Ocean, and the Saturn V rocket lifted the spacecraft eastward over the Atlantic after launch. The mission then continued into Earth orbit before the spacecraft headed toward the Moon, so the ocean crossing was only the opening geographical stage of the journey.
Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins formed the Apollo 11 crew. Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility on 20 July 1969, while Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. After returning to Earth, the astronauts splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on 24 July. That final recovery location can cause confusion: Apollo 11 crossed the Atlantic after launch but landed back on Earth in the Pacific.
