Who were the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest?

The story behind the answer

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first climbers confirmed to reach Mount Everest’s summit, on 29 May 1953.

They were members of the ninth British expedition to attempt the mountain. Hillary was a beekeeper and mountaineer from New Zealand, while Tenzing was a Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer who had already joined several Everest expeditions.

The pair reached the summit at about 11:30 a.m. They spent only a short time there because of limited oxygen, cold, and the dangers of the descent. Hillary photographed Tenzing on the summit; Tenzing did not photograph Hillary because he was unfamiliar with the camera.

George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared during an earlier 1924 attempt, and it remains unknown whether they reached the summit. Hillary and Tenzing’s ascent was accepted as the first confirmed successful climb.
