Which African country contains most of Mount Kilimanjaro?

The story behind the answer

Tanzania contains most of Mount Kilimanjaro, including its summit.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcanic massif in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Its highest peak, Uhuru Peak on Kibo, rises to 5,895 metres above sea level, making Kilimanjaro Africa’s highest mountain. Although its slopes spread close to the border, the mountain’s summit lies in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the highest and is dormant rather than extinct; scientists consider it capable of erupting again, although no historical eruption is recorded. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct volcanic cones.

The mountain is protected within Kilimanjaro National Park. Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller, accompanied by Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo, made the first recorded ascent to Kibo’s summit in 1889. Climbers pass through several ecological zones, from cultivated foothills to alpine desert and a summit ice cap.
