What is the exact date of Bob Marley's birth?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945. His birth name was Robert Nesta Marley, and he was born in Nine Mile, in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, then a British colony.

Marley’s mother was Cedella Malcolm, later known as Cedella Booker, and his father was Norval Sinclair Marley. Norval was of English and Welsh ancestry, while Cedella was an Afro-Jamaican woman from Jamaica. Marley’s mixed family background later became part of public discussion, although his music and identity were rooted strongly in Jamaican culture and Rastafari.

The date is sometimes confused because biographies may use different date formats: February 6, 1945 in the United States, or 6 February 1945 in British and Jamaican usage. Neither format changes the date. Another recurring mix-up concerns his name; some accounts say his first and middle names were reversed on an early passport, contributing to the use of “Bob.”

Marley died on May 11, 1981, in Miami, Florida, at age 36. He was buried near his birthplace in Nine Mile, where a mausoleum now commemorates him.
