An AFL goal square extends 9 metres from the goal line to its outer edge.
The goal square is the rectangular area immediately in front of the goalposts. It is 9 metres wide and extends 9 metres out from the goal line. A player restarting play after a behind must kick the ball from within this square.
The square is also central to the traditional “kick-in” process. After the opposing team scores a behind, a defending player takes the kick from inside the goal square and attempts to move the ball back into play.
The goal square should not be confused with the wider scoring area between the two goalposts, or with the 50-metre arcs marked on many grounds. AFL field markings are measured in metric units, although field dimensions can vary within permitted ranges.
