The children’s charity founded by J.K. Rowling as the Children’s High Level Group is now called Lumos.
Rowling helped establish the Children’s High Level Group in 2005 with politician and campaigner Emma Nicholson. The organisation worked to improve the lives of children separated from their families, especially those living in institutions. It was renamed Lumos in 2010, taking its name from the light-producing spell in the Harry Potter books.
Lumos campaigns for family-based care and against the unnecessary institutionalisation of children. Its work is international, so it is not simply a literary foundation or a British book charity. The name change explains why references may list both the Children’s High Level Group and Lumos for the same organisation.
