What is the capital city of the Himalayan country Bhutan?
Answer
Thimphu
Answer
Thimphu
Thimphu is the capital city of the Himalayan country Bhutan.
Thimphu lies in western-central Bhutan, in the Wang Chuu valley, at an elevation of roughly 2,300 metres. It became Bhutan’s permanent capital in 1961, when King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck moved the government there from Punakha.
Unlike many national capitals, Thimphu has no commercial airport; Bhutan’s main airport is at Paro, west of the city. Thimphu is also notable for having no traffic lights, with traffic traditionally managed by police officers at important junctions.
Punakha remains historically important because it was Bhutan’s capital until 1955 and still hosts major religious and royal ceremonies. Thimphu is the political and administrative centre, while Paro is the country’s principal international gateway.
