A behind is the one-point score awarded when the ball passes between a goalpost and an adjacent behind post.
Australian rules football has four posts at each end of the ground. The two taller central posts are goalposts, while the shorter outer posts are behind posts. A ball passing completely between the goalposts scores a goal worth six points. A ball passing between a goalpost and a behind post scores a behind worth one point.
A behind can also be recorded when the ball touches a goalpost, or when an attacking player carries or kicks it across the goal line without scoring a goal. The defending team then restarts play with a kick-in from the goal square.
The term is specific to Australian rules football and should not be confused with a goal, which is the sport’s major scoring play. Scores are commonly written as goals.behinds (total), such as 10.8 (68).
