What is the AFL’s annual Indigenous celebration round called?

The story behind the answer

The AFL’s annual Indigenous celebration round is called Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

The round honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and celebrates their contributions to Australian rules football and Australian society. It is named after Sir Doug Nicholls, a former Fitzroy player who became the first Indigenous Australian governor of an Australian state.

The AFL’s Indigenous round began in 2007 and was renamed the Sir Doug Nicholls Round in 2017. Clubs typically wear specially designed Indigenous guernseys, many of which are created in collaboration with Indigenous artists and communities.

Dreamtime at the ‘G is a prominent match played during the round, but it is not the round’s official name. That fixture traditionally features Essendon and Richmond and has become an important celebration of Indigenous culture in its own right.
