What is J.K. Rowling’s second published Harry Potter novel?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s second published Harry Potter novel is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Bloomsbury published the book in the United Kingdom on 2 July 1998. It follows Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, where students are mysteriously attacked and a hidden chamber connected to the school’s past is opened.

The novel introduces or develops important elements of the wider series, including the school’s founder Salazar Slytherin, the basilisk, the diary of Tom Riddle, and the house-elf Dobby. The diary also provides an early link to the history of Lord Voldemort.

The title can be confused with later books because each installment contains a major mystery or dangerous magical object. It is nevertheless the second novel in publication order, following Philosopher’s Stone and preceding Prisoner of Azkaban.
