J.K. Rowling’s charity for disadvantaged children is called Lumos.
Rowling founded the organization in 2005 as the Children’s High Level Group, after becoming concerned about children living in institutions. It was renamed Lumos in 2010. The name refers to a light-producing spell in the Harry Potter stories and reflects the charity’s stated aim of helping children move from institutional care into family-based or community-based support.
Lumos works internationally on reforming systems that separate children from families. Its programs have included support for family reunification, foster care, adoption where appropriate, and community services. The organization argues that institutionalization can harm children’s development and well-being.
Lumos is not the same as Pottermore, Rowling’s former digital Harry Potter platform, or Comic Relief, the broader British charity associated with Red Nose Day. Rowling has also supported other charitable causes, including multiple sclerosis research and anti-poverty initiatives.
