What is George Jetson's job title?

The story behind the answer

George Jetson’s job title is digital index operator.

George works for Spacely’s Space Sprockets, where his supposedly demanding occupation involves operating a computer system. The title is intentionally comic: despite George’s frequent complaints about his workload, much of his routine consists of pressing a button or sequence of buttons on the machine RUDI.

RUDI is short for Referential Universal Digital Indexer. The job satirizes mid-century anxieties about automation and office work, presenting a future where sophisticated computers exist but workers may still perform repetitive, narrowly defined tasks. George’s boss, Cosmo G. Spacely, regularly threatens to fire him, often over minor mistakes or misunderstandings.

Viewers sometimes choose “computer programmer” because George works with advanced technology, but that is not his stated title. He is not portrayed as an engineer or factory worker either. The deliberately mundane role helps make George an ordinary, overworked suburban employee inside an extraordinary science-fiction world. George was voiced in the original series by George O’Hanlon, whose everyman persona helped shape the character.
