What is Emmet Brickowski believed to be in The Lego Movie?

Emmet Brickowski is believed to be “the Special” in The Lego Movie.

At the beginning of the story, Emmet appears to be an entirely ordinary LEGO construction worker who follows instructions and blends into the crowd. The Master Builder Vitruvius, however, has a vision that a chosen figure called the Special will find the Piece of Resistance and defeat the tyrannical President Business.

Emmet is mistakenly identified as that figure after he discovers the Piece of Resistance. He does not initially possess the creative skills associated with the Master Builders, which creates much of the film’s humor and emotional tension. His importance ultimately comes from his willingness to learn, cooperate, and imagine new possibilities.

The answer is sometimes confused with “Master Builder,” but those are different ideas. A Master Builder is someone able to construct creations without instructions; “the Special” is the prophecy-based role Emmet is believed to fill. President Business and the Kragle are opposing elements in the plot, not identities Emmet is believed to have.
