Alex’s father in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is called Zuba.
Zuba is the leader of a pride in the African setting of the 2008 sequel. The film reveals Alex’s early life through flashbacks, showing how he was separated from his parents before becoming a New York zoo attraction known as Alex.
Zuba’s role gives the sequel a family storyline alongside the broader comedy about the zoo animals trying to adapt to Africa. Alex’s father is protective and proud, but the relationship becomes complicated when Alex struggles to understand his place among wild lions.
Zuba is easy to confuse with Makunga, another major lion in the film. Makunga is a rival who seeks leadership of the pride; he is not Alex’s father. The name also should not be confused with Alex’s birth name, Alakay, which identifies Alex before his life in New York.
