J.K. Rowling was appointed an OBE in 2001 for her services to children’s literature.
OBE stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Rowling received the honor during the 2001 New Year Honours, which recognize achievements and service in the United Kingdom and beyond.
The award followed the rapid international success of the Harry Potter books and recognized her contribution to children’s literature. It is a distinct rank from MBE, which is a lower grade, and CBE, which is a higher grade within the order.
Rowling later received other honors, including the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2010 and the PEN Award for literary service in 2016. Those recognitions should not be confused with her 2001 OBE appointment.
