What Hogwarts house does J.K. Rowling place Hermione Granger in?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling places Hermione Granger in Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat assigns Hermione to Gryffindor when she begins her first year at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She joins Harry Potter and Ron Weasley in the same house, helping establish the trio at the center of the story.

Gryffindor is associated with courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Hermione is exceptionally academic, but her defining choices repeatedly involve moral courage, loyalty, and willingness to confront danger. Her house placement therefore reflects more than her intelligence or love of books.

Hermione’s intelligence is sometimes associated with Ravenclaw, the house known for learning and wit, which makes that a common mix-up. In the novels, however, the Sorting Hat ultimately identifies her strongest qualities with Gryffindor.
