This format marked a change from the 2018 and 2022 editions, when the athletics championships formed part of the wider multi-sport European Championships. European Athletics announced in 2022 that it would move away from that arrangement for the 2026 edition.
A standalone championship gives athletics its own dedicated timetable, venue focus, and branding rather than placing it inside a larger festival involving several sports. Birmingham therefore hosted the continental athletics championships independently at Alexander Stadium.
The format does not mean the event was an invitational meeting or a qualifying competition. It remained the senior outdoor European championship, with national teams competing across track, field, combined, relay, and road events. The distinction concerns the event’s relationship to the broader multi-sport European Championships.
