What fictional Surrey village is Harry Potter’s home in J.K. Rowling’s novels?

The story behind the answer

Little Whinging is the fictional Surrey village where Harry Potter lives with the Dursleys in J.K. Rowling’s novels.

Harry’s address is 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging. He lives there with his aunt Petunia, uncle Vernon, and cousin Dudley before discovering that he is a wizard and leaving for Hogwarts.

The Dursleys’ home represents the ordinary, restrictive life Harry has known since infancy. Important early events occur there, including the arrival of his Hogwarts letters and the escape that follows when the family tries to prevent him from reading them.

Little Whinging is not the same place as Godric’s Hollow, where Harry was born, or Hogsmeade, the wizarding village near Hogwarts. Privet Drive was filmed in Leavesden for the movies, while the novels present Little Whinging as a fictional Surrey setting.
