What fictional London station platform appears in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books?

The story behind the answer

Platform 9¾ is the fictional London station platform in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.

Harry and other young witches and wizards use Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross railway station to board the Hogwarts Express. The platform lies between the ordinary platforms numbered 9 and 10 and is reached by passing through the barrier between them.

In reality, the tracks at King’s Cross did not originally have a platform 9¾. The books turned an otherwise ordinary railway location into one of the series’ most recognizable magical thresholds. King’s Cross later installed a commemorative luggage trolley at the station, creating a popular visitor photo spot.

Readers sometimes confuse the platform with a real railway service or with the train’s destination. Platform 9¾ is the magical departure point; Hogwarts is reached after the Hogwarts Express travels north from London.
