What European title was used for Need for Speed: High Stakes?

The story behind the answer

The European title for Need for Speed: High Stakes was Need for Speed: Road Challenge.

Electronic Arts released the game as Need for Speed: High Stakes in North America, but European markets received it under the title Need for Speed: Road Challenge. The 1999 game was the fourth main entry in the series and followed Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit. It was developed for PlayStation by EA Canada and for Windows by EA Seattle.

The title reflected the game’s emphasis on risk and consequence. Its High Stakes mode allowed a player to wager a saved car, potentially losing that vehicle after a defeat. The game also introduced a damage system in which collisions affected both a car’s appearance and performance, while repairs and upgrades consumed tournament winnings.

Regional naming can make this entry especially easy to confuse with unrelated imagined subtitles such as “Speed Trial” or “Street Duel.” In Japan, the same game used another regional name: Over Drivin’ IV. The Windows version also added visual improvements and extra tracks compared with the PlayStation release.
