What does the “HHR” name in Chevrolet HHR officially stand for?

The story behind the answer

The “HHR” name in Chevrolet HHR officially stands for “Heritage High Roof.”

Chevrolet launched the HHR for the 2006 model year as a retro-styled compact wagon. Its upright body, tall roof, rounded fenders, and grille drew inspiration from Chevrolet’s Suburban-based 1949 Advance Design trucks, especially their practical, rounded shapes.

The high-roof description referred to the vehicle’s tall, boxy profile and useful interior packaging. Although the HHR looked like a small utility wagon, it was built as a front-wheel-drive passenger vehicle and shared engineering with the Chevrolet Cobalt.

The name is sometimes incorrectly expanded using words such as “hatchback” or “hybrid.” The official Chevrolet interpretation was “Heritage High Roof,” reflecting the design’s combination of historical styling and elevated body shape.
