J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows first went on sale in Britain on 21 July 2007.
The novel was the seventh and final book in the main Harry Potter series. Bloomsbury released it in the United Kingdom at one minute past midnight, following intense worldwide anticipation. The book continued Harry’s search for the remaining Horcruxes and his confrontation with Lord Voldemort.
The release was accompanied by strict security and secrecy measures. Bookshops held midnight events, and many retailers prepared large displays for the enormous expected demand. The British and U.S. editions appeared on the same date, making the launch a major international publishing event rather than a staggered national release.
The date is sometimes confused with 31 July, Harry Potter’s birthday and Rowling’s birthday. It is also easy to confuse the novel’s publication date with the dates of the film adaptations, which were released later and in two parts. The book itself completed the seven-volume story.
