Lumos is the charity founded by J.K. Rowling that was initially called the Children’s High Level Group.
The organization was established in 2005 after Rowling became concerned about children living in institutions. It later changed its name to Lumos in 2010, taking the name of a light-producing spell from the Harry Potter books.
Lumos campaigns for children to move from institutional care into family-based or community-based support. Its work has focused on changing systems in countries where children may be separated from families because of poverty, disability, or inadequate social services.
The charity’s name is a literary reference, but its work is not a fictional project. Lumos operates as an independent organization concerned with child protection and family care. This distinguishes it from Rowling’s earlier charitable giving through organizations such as Comic Relief and One Parent Families.
