Under what name did J.K. Rowling publish her children’s book The Ickabog?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling published the children’s book The Ickabog under the name J.K. Rowling.

The Ickabog was released in 2020 as a standalone children’s fairy tale. Rowling first wrote it years earlier while working on the Harry Potter books, then revisited it during the COVID-19 pandemic. She published the story online in installments between May and July 2020, allowing children and families to read it free during the initial release period.

The book is set in the fictional kingdom of Cornucopia, where a fearful legend about a monster called the Ickabog becomes entangled with political power and injustice. It is separate from the Harry Potter universe and does not continue Harry’s story.

The printed edition included illustrations selected from a children’s competition. Rowling donated her net royalties from the book to support groups affected by the pandemic. That charitable publication plan is part of the book’s unusual origin and distinguishes it from her earlier commercial releases.
