The Lego Movie is based on the Lego construction toy line.
Released in 2014, the animated film turns Lego’s interlocking bricks and minifigures into a shared fictional universe. Its central character, Emmet, is an ordinary construction worker who becomes involved in a conflict over the future of the Lego world. The movie includes characters and settings inspired by Lego themes, including space, pirates, castles, and superheroes.
The film was written and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with animation produced by Animal Logic. Although the visuals imitate the slightly jerky look of stop-motion Lego animation, the movie was made using computer animation. That distinction is a common source of confusion: it looks like a brickfilm, but it was not physically animated frame by frame with real bricks.
The movie launched a franchise that later included The Lego Batman Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. It also inspired related Lego sets and video games.
