The Cave of the Patriarchs is in which West Bank city?
Answer
Hebron
Answer
Hebron
The Cave of the Patriarchs is in Hebron, a city in the West Bank. The sanctuary stands in the heart of Hebron’s Old City, roughly 30 kilometers south of Jerusalem.
The site is known by several names: Jews commonly call it the Cave of Machpelah or Cave of the Patriarchs, while Muslims know the complex as the Ibrahimi Mosque or Sanctuary of Ibrahim. Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions associate it with the burials of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah.
A massive rectangular enclosure was built over the traditional cave during the Herodian period. The site later became a Byzantine church, then a mosque after the Muslim conquest, and was controlled by Crusader and Ayyubid rulers at different points. Its religious importance has made it one of the most contested and politically sensitive places in the West Bank.
The key distinction is that Hebron is the city, while the Cave of the Patriarchs is the sacred complex within it. Bethlehem, Jericho, and Nablus are also West Bank cities, but none is the location of this sanctuary.
