On what date was J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book published in the United States?
Answer
1 September 1998
Answer
1 September 1998
J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was published in the United States on 1 September 1998.
The American edition was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, while the British edition was titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Scholastic published the United States edition, more than a year after Bloomsbury released the British edition on 26 June 1997.
The change from “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” was made for the American market because the publisher believed “sorcerer” would be more immediately appealing to American readers. The story and characters remained fundamentally the same, although some wording was adjusted for American usage.
This date is therefore different from the British publication date. Both titles refer to the same first novel in the seven-book Harry Potter series.
