On what date did the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics officially open?

The story behind the answer

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics officially opened on 4 February 2022.

The opening ceremony took place at Beijing National Stadium, widely known as the Bird's Nest. Beijing became the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, having staged the Summer Games in 2008.

The Games officially ran from 4 to 20 February 2022, although some curling and ice-hockey matches began on 2 February. That early competition can cause confusion about the opening date, but the formal opening ceremony and official start date were both 4 February.

The Winter Olympics used venues in Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou. Beijing hosted the indoor ice sports, while Yanqing and Zhangjiakou staged alpine skiing, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, ski jumping, cross-country skiing and related events.
