Answer
25 April 2015
The 2015 Nepal earthquake struck the Himalayas on 25 April 2015.
The main shock occurred at 11:56 local time in Nepal, with its epicentre near Barpak in Gorkha District, northwest of Kathmandu. It had a moment magnitude of 7.8 and ruptured part of the boundary where the Indian Plate is being forced beneath the Eurasian Plate.
The earthquake caused extensive destruction across central Nepal and affected northern India, Tibet and nearby regions. Kathmandu suffered severe damage, while historic monuments and villages were also devastated. Avalanches triggered by the shaking struck Mount Everest, killing climbers and support staff at base camp.
A major aftershock of magnitude 7.3 occurred on 12 May 2015. That later event is why some accounts mention May, but the principal earthquake occurred on 25 April. The disaster killed nearly 9,000 people and led to major reconstruction efforts.
