The 2006 Turin Winter Olympics opened on 10 February 2006.
The opening ceremony was held at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin, Italy. It featured Italian cultural themes, theatrical performances, and the official parade of athletes. Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi declared the Games open.
The Olympics continued through February 26, with events held in Turin and mountain venues elsewhere in the Piedmont region. Turin became the first Italian city to host the Winter Olympics, although Cortina d’Ampezzo had hosted the Winter Games in 1956.
The opening ceremony also included the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. Italian short-track speed skater Fabio Carta carried the flame into the stadium, and cross-country skiing champion Stefania Belmondo lit the cauldron. Germany topped the medal table with 36 medals.
