Answer
October 23, 2001
Steve Jobs introduced the first iPod on October 23, 2001.
The portable music player was presented at an Apple event titled “A Thousand Songs in Your Pocket.” Its original 5 GB hard drive could hold about 1,000 songs, a remarkable capacity for a device that fit in a pocket. The iPod initially worked with Macintosh computers and used Apple’s newly developed music-management software, iTunes.
The iPod was not Apple’s first digital-music product, but its combination of compact design, simple controls, and integration with iTunes helped make it a major consumer hit. It also became an important part of Apple’s wider move into portable electronics.
People sometimes confuse the iPod’s introduction with the launch of the iTunes Music Store, which opened in 2003, or with the later iPhone introduction in 2007. The first iPod predates both events.
