Johnny Cash was married to which fellow singer?

The story behind the answer

Johnny Cash was married to fellow singer June Carter Cash, a member of the influential Carter Family and a major country performer in her own right. Before their marriage, she was professionally known as June Carter.

Cash and Carter met through the country-music circuit and worked together for years before marrying. Their 1967 duet “Jackson” became a major success and won the 1968 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Performance, Duet, Trio or Group. They also recorded “If I Were a Carpenter,” which won another Grammy in 1971.

Cash proposed to Carter onstage during a February 1968 performance in London, Ontario. They married on March 1, 1968, in Franklin, Kentucky. Their son, John Carter Cash, was born in 1970, and June continued performing, recording, and appearing regularly alongside Johnny.

June was more than Cash’s duet partner. She co-wrote “Ring of Fire,” helped support him through periods of addiction and recovery, and remained his musical and personal companion until her death in May 2003. Johnny Cash died only a few months later.
