The Harry Potter book series has been translated into over 80 languages.
The translations helped turn Rowling’s seven-book story into an international publishing phenomenon. Readers around the world encountered Harry, Ron, Hermione and Hogwarts through editions adapted for different languages and markets while retaining the same overall narrative.
Translation involved more than replacing individual words. Names, jokes, school terminology and cultural references sometimes required careful decisions, and different editions can use localized spellings or titles. The first book also has different English titles: Philosopher’s Stone in the United Kingdom and Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States.
The figure is commonly stated as more than 80 languages, rather than exactly 80. It should not be confused with the number of countries where the books were sold or the number of languages represented by fan translations, which are separate measures.
