In which year was the first Harry Potter film released?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter film was released in 2001.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premiered in London on 4 November 2001 and opened in the United Kingdom and United States later that month. Chris Columbus directed the film, which adapted Rowling’s first novel and introduced Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

The American release used the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, matching the American edition of the novel. This title difference is why the film can appear under two names in reference works.

The movie was followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002. The film series ultimately comprised eight movies, ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
