J.K. Rowling received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University in 2008.
Harvard awarded Rowling an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at its 2008 commencement. She also delivered the commencement address, which became widely known for discussing the benefits of failure and the importance of imagination.
In the speech, Rowling described the difficult period after university and before her literary success. She connected personal setbacks with lessons about resilience, empathy, and using imagination to understand other people’s experiences.
The honorary degree was an academic honour, not a qualification earned through a new course of study at Harvard. Rowling had already graduated from the University of Exeter in 1987. Her Harvard appearance therefore combined recognition of her public achievements with a speech to graduating students.
