In which Pokémon region does the original Pokémon TV series begin?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon TV series begins in the Kanto region.

Kanto is the setting for the anime’s first major journey, in which Ash travels from Pallet Town to collect Gym Badges and qualify for the Indigo Plateau Conference. The region is based partly on Japan’s real Kantō region, although the anime and games present it as a fictional Pokémon world.

The first television series features the original 151 Pokémon associated with the Kanto Pokédex. Important locations include Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Vermilion City, Celadon City, Fuchsia City, and Cinnabar Island.

Kanto is sometimes confused with the Indigo League, but the two terms refer to different things. Kanto is the region, while the Indigo League is its Pokémon League competition. After the Kanto storyline, Ash travels to the neighboring Johto region for the next part of the anime.
