HBO ordered the current DC series Lanterns directly to series in June 2024.
The order confirmed an eight-episode season, with Chris Mundy serving as showrunner and executive producer. Damon Lindelof and Tom King were also confirmed as creators and executive producers during the project’s development.
This date belongs to the current version of Lanterns, which was developed for the new DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran. It followed years of development on a different Green Lantern television project led by Greg Berlanti. That earlier project began in 2019 and received a ten-episode HBO Max order in October 2020.
The distinction matters because both projects are connected to Green Lantern characters but have different creative directions. The current series centers on Hal Jordan and John Stewart in an Earth-based detective story. It was described as being influenced by True Detective and Slow Horses rather than as the space opera initially envisioned for the earlier project.
