In which episode does Buffy die at the end?

The story behind the answer

In which episode does Buffy die at the end? Buffy dies at the end of “The Gift,” the season-five finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She sacrifices herself by jumping into a dimensional portal to save her younger sister Dawn and prevent an apocalypse.

“The Gift” originally aired on May 22, 2001, as the show's 100th episode. Buffy has learned that Dawn's blood is needed to open a portal, and she refuses to accept that her sister must die. After fighting Glory and reaching the ritual site, Buffy realizes that her own death can close the portal because she and Dawn share the same blood. Her final act saves the world, and her grave later bears the epitaph “She saved the world. A lot.”

Buffy's death is not permanent. In the season-six premiere, “Bargaining,” Willow uses magic to resurrect her. The event is distinct from “The Body,” which focuses on Joyce Summers's death, and “Chosen,” the series finale, where Buffy survives the destruction of Sunnydale.
