In which English county did J.K. Rowling grow up near the Welsh border?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling grew up in Gloucestershire, near the Welsh border.

Rowling spent part of her childhood in the village of Tutshill, in Gloucestershire, England. Tutshill lies close to Chepstow, which is across the River Wye in Monmouthshire, Wales. This location meant that her early life was shaped by both English and Welsh surroundings.

She attended Wyedean School and College in nearby Sedbury. The landscape around the Forest of Dean and the border region is often discussed in connection with the atmosphere of her childhood, although the fictional settings in Harry Potter are not direct copies of one single place.

The county is easy to confuse with nearby places because Rowling also lived in Winterbourne, near Bristol, as a young child and later studied at the University of Exeter. Her childhood home near Chepstow, however, was in Gloucestershire, while Chepstow itself is in Wales.
