J.K. Rowling completed the first Harry Potter manuscript in Edinburgh.
Rowling moved to Edinburgh in 1993 after living in Portugal and returning to the United Kingdom. She was raising her daughter Jessica and continued developing the Harry Potter story while living in the Scottish capital. The manuscript was completed before it was submitted to publishers and accepted by Bloomsbury.
Edinburgh is therefore associated with the completion of the first book, although the idea for Harry Potter had begun earlier. Rowling has described conceiving the character and elements of the story during a train journey from Manchester to London in 1990.
The first novel was published in Britain in 1997. The city connection is sometimes simplified into the claim that Edinburgh inspired every part of Hogwarts, but the school and its setting are fictional creations shaped by many influences rather than a direct portrait of one real location.
