In which city did Bob Marley perform his final concert?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley performed his final concert in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The show took place on September 23, 1980, at Pittsburgh’s Stanley Theater, now known as the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. It was the final date of the American leg of Marley’s Uprising Tour and his last live performance anywhere.

Marley had recently played two shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City. On September 21, he collapsed while jogging in Central Park, and doctors found that his cancer had spread to his brain, lungs, and liver. Despite his rapidly worsening health, he traveled to Pittsburgh for one last concert two days later.

The Pittsburgh performance is sometimes confused with Marley’s final outdoor concert, which was held on July 6, 1980, at Dalymount Park in Dublin, Ireland. New York City was an important stop immediately before the final show, but it was not the city where Marley last performed. He died in Miami on May 11, 1981, after his condition deteriorated during the journey home to Jamaica.
