The Madagascar spin-off film Penguins of Madagascar was released in 2014.
The film centers on Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private rather than Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria. It combines the penguins’ covert-operation comedy with a globe-spanning plot involving the villainous octopus Dave and the classified animal organization North Wind.
Penguins of Madagascar was directed by Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith. It was released in the United States on November 26, 2014, following the penguins’ earlier appearances in the main Madagascar films and their television series. The feature expands the quartet’s military-parody identities into a full spy-adventure format.
The year is sometimes confused with the 2012 release of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, the third main film. Penguins of Madagascar is a separate spin-off, even though it uses the same characters and franchise world.
